The Miqqut Project: Literacy & Essential Skills Development in a Cultural Context

Region:
Initiative Description:

The objectives of this 3-year Nunavut-focused qualitative community-based research project are to:

  • create greater understanding of the promising practice program models that embed Literacy and Essential Skills within context‐based programs
  • support program administrators and project facilitators to embed literacy and Essential Skills into existing and new context‐based programs for youth

During the research, the Project Team:

  • Interviewed instructors and participants of non-formal community programs that embedded literacy and language in culture-based skills programs.
  • Piloted two 4-month Elder taught sewing programs in Rankin Inlet (Miqqut 1 & Miqqut 2). In the second program, adult educators intentionally embedded Essential Skill development with the sewing skill instruction.
  • Interviewed instructors and participants in sewing programs at the beginning, end and 6 months post-program to compare learning and other outcomes for participants.
